Rahu and Ketu: Understanding the Shadow Planets That Control Your Destiny

Rahu and Ketu are the most mysterious entities in Vedic astrology. They are not physical planets but mathematical points — the North and South nodes of the Moon — where the Moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic. Yet in Jyotish, they are treated as full planets with profound karmic significance, and their 18-year combined Mahadasha period is often the most transformative of a person’s life.

What Are Rahu and Ketu?

Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180 degrees apart and always move in retrograde motion. In mythology, they are depicted as the severed head (Rahu) and tail (Ketu) of the serpent demon Svarbhanu, who disguised himself as a god to drink the nectar of immortality (Amrita). The Sun and Moon recognized him and alerted Vishnu, who severed his body with the Sudarshana Chakra. But since Svarbhanu had already swallowed the nectar, both halves became immortal.

Rahu: The North Node

Rahu represents obsession, ambition, illusion (Maya), foreign lands, technology, innovation, sudden gains, manipulation, and worldly desires. Rahu is the force that pulls you toward the unfamiliar, the unconventional, and the material world. A strong Rahu can create sudden, meteoric success — but often through unorthodox or dramatic means.

Rahu’s gemstone is Hessonite Garnet (Gomed). Rahu is co-ruler of Aquarius (Kumbha) in some classical texts and is exalted in Taurus (Vrishabha) according to various schools.

Ketu: The South Node

Ketu represents detachment, spirituality, liberation (Moksha), past-life karma, occult knowledge, isolation, psychic abilities, and sudden losses. While Rahu makes you crave the world, Ketu makes you want to renounce it. Ketu is the most spiritual planet in the chart and often produces saints, mystics, and highly intuitive individuals.

Ketu’s gemstone is Cat’s Eye (Lehsuniya). Ketu is co-ruler of Scorpio (Vrishchika) and is exalted in Scorpio according to several classical sources.

The Rahu-Ketu Transit (Every 18 Months)

Rahu and Ketu transit one pair of signs every 18 months approximately. Their current transit from October 2023 to May 2025 placed Rahu in Pisces (Meena) and Ketu in Virgo (Kanya). From May 2025 onwards, Rahu transited into Aquarius (Kumbha) and Ketu into Leo (Simha) — a transit with significant implications for global technology, political shifts, and individual spiritual awakening.

When Rahu-Ketu Are Highly Malefic

Rahu and Ketu become highly problematic when they afflict the Moon (mental health challenges), the Sun (identity and father-related issues), or the Lagna Lord (overall life direction). Eclipses occur when the Moon and Sun are near the nodal axis, which is why lunar and solar eclipses are considered inauspicious periods in Vedic tradition.
