Pearl (Moti) is the gemstone of the Moon (Chandra) — the planet of mind, emotions, intuition, mother, and the subconscious in Vedic astrology. Unlike most gemstones that are minerals extracted from the Earth, Pearl is an organic gemstone created within living mollusks. This organic origin makes it uniquely aligned with the Moon’s watery, nurturing, and life-sustaining energy.
The Moon in Vedic Astrology
The Moon is the fastest-moving planet in Vedic astrology, completing a full zodiac cycle in just 27-28 days. It governs the mind, emotions, mental stability, relationship with the mother, domestic happiness, imagination, intuition, and the subconscious. The Moon’s position in the birth chart is arguably the most important placement for predicting mental health, emotional patterns, and overall happiness.

Types of Pearls for Astrological Use
1. Natural Sea Pearl (Basra / South Sea)
The gold standard for Jyotish. Natural pearls form without human intervention in wild oysters. Basra pearls from the Persian Gulf are the most historically prized. Natural South Sea pearls (Australia, Philippines, Indonesia) are the largest natural pearls available. Price: Rs. 5,000 – Rs. 50,000+ per Ratti for high-quality natural pearls.
2. Certified Natural Freshwater Pearl
An accessible and astrologically valid option. Must be certified as natural (not cultured/farmed) by a gemological laboratory. Price: Rs. 500 – Rs. 3,000 per Ratti.
3. Avoid Cultured/Farmed Pearls
Cultured pearls have a thin nacre layer over an artificial nucleus inserted by humans. They have minimal to no astrological value and should not be used for Jyotish purposes.
How to Wear Pearl
Set in silver (never gold for Moon). Wear on the Little Finger (Kanishtha) of the right hand on a Monday morning during Shukla Paksha, preferably during the Moon’s hora. Soak in unboiled cow milk + Gangajal for 20 minutes. Chant “Om Som Somaya Namah” 108 times before wearing. Minimum weight recommended: 5 Ratti for effective results.
