Ruby (Manikya): The Gemstone of the Sun and How It Transforms Your Life

Ruby (Manikya) is the gemstone of the Sun (Surya) — the King of all planets in Vedic astrology. Just as the Sun is the source of all light, life, and energy in our solar system, Ruby is considered the most royal, authoritative, and life-affirming gemstone in Jyotish. A genuine, unheated Burma Ruby in deep pigeon-blood red is among the rarest and most valuable gemstones on Earth.

The Sun in Vedic Astrology

The Sun represents the soul (Atma), self-confidence, authority, father, government, health (specifically the heart and spine), career recognition, leadership, and vitality. A weakened Sun in the birth chart manifests as low self-esteem, heart or eye problems, poor relationship with father or authority figures, and lack of recognition in career.

Benefits of Wearing Ruby

  • Dramatically boosts self-confidence, courage, and leadership presence
  • Strengthens the heart, eyes, spine, and immune system
  • Brings recognition, authority, and career advancement
  • Improves relationship with the father and authority figures
  • Highly beneficial for politicians, executives, doctors, and performers
  • Removes the malefic effects of a debilitated or afflicted Sun
  • Attracts name, fame, and social status

Who Should Wear Ruby

Ruby is most beneficial for:

  • Leo (Simha) Lagna — Sun is the Lagna lord
  • Aries (Mesha) and Scorpio (Vrishchika) Lagna — Sun is a trinal lord
  • Cancer (Karka) Lagna — Sun rules the 2nd house
  • Anyone running Sun Mahadasha or Antardasha

Avoid if Sun rules the 6th, 8th, or 12th house without other compensating factors. Always consult an expert.

What to Look for in an Astrological Ruby

  • Color: Pigeon-blood red — a pure, vivid red with a slight bluish undertone (Burma) or pure red (Mozambique)
  • Origin: Burma (Myanmar) produces the finest pigeon-blood Rubies; Mozambique offers the best value-quality ratio
  • Treatment: Unheated rubies are extremely rare and highly valuable; minor clarity enhancements (fracture filling) are somewhat common and reduce value significantly
  • Minimum Weight: 3 Ratti for basic results; 5+ Ratti for strong, lasting effects

Wearing Method

Set in gold (preferred) or copper. Wear on the Ring Finger (Anamika) of the right hand. Energize on a Sunday morning during Shukla Paksha. Chant “Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah” 108 times before wearing. Ideally wear during the first hour after sunrise on a Sunday.
